Nurse Schaefer met with the 4th grade in honor of Global Handwashing Day 2018. She showed us a video on personal hygiene and discussed with the kids the importance of brushing your teeth, showering, getting a good night's sleep & exercising in order to stay healthy. Nurse Schaefer told students that there are toothbrushes in the nurse's office if they ever need to come down & brush. She answered a number of good questions from the audience and we're hoping the conversation will continue at home. Here's the video your child saw today -
https://www.brainpop.com/health/personalhealth/personalhygiene/. This week's team challenge was to build the tallest structure in 20 minutes. Teams could only use scissors, 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 yard of string, 1 yard of tape & 4 mini marshmallows.
Can you stack six cups into a pyramid with a rubber band and string?! We did & it took a lot of teamwork! Students had to collaborate, communicate & persevere through challenges to be successful with this task.
We had an awesome trip to the Aquinnah Cliffs to learn about erosion and fossils. Thank you to Richard Skidmore who shared the history of the lighthouse with us and explained why the lighthouse was moved because of erosion. We also enjoyed meeting with Bret Stearns and two other members of the Tribe who shared the legend of the cliffs and how they work to protect them. Ms. Moran and Suzanne Scordino (from IGS) brought fossils for us to look at before we went out to search for our own.
We visited the Oak Bluffs Public Library to learn about this summer's reading program - Reading Rocks! Students can earn prizes for logging the number of hours they read this summer. Prizes include gift cards to Ryan Amusements Arcade and Game Room, Ben & Bill's Chocolate Emporium, and Good Ship Lollipop.
Congratulations to Natalie Evanson and Grace Cotton for winning the "Mom of the Year" essay contest sponsored by the Harborview Hotel and Rosewater restaurant! Each family attended the Mother's Day brunch at the Harborview and the girls read their essays to their mothers in front of a full restaurant.
